Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely gotten through winter in Payson just yet. Mother Nature may have a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s in charge. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call us for out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall can bury your air conditioner in the snow, diminishing its performance when the temperatures begin to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from running as such. The situation could become an even larger problem too if you don’t prepare for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are things you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner operate correctly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the coming days and weeks.

  1. Ensure you have a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Walk around the area frequently to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that could have piled up during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, placing a cover over your air conditioner might end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner may be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, causing damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Payson will most likely swing up and down over the last few days of colder temperatures, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can impact the performance of your air conditioner. At North Mechanical Heating and Cooling in Payson, we are always available to check any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re about air conditioner service or adding a new system.
