How Can I Improve My Indoor Air Quality?

February 11, 2016

The EPA has noted that indoor air can be 2-5 times more polluted than the air in bigger cities. Indoor air is also more stale. While we’d all like to be able to open the windows and get some fresh air, that’s not always realistic, especially this winter. There are a couple basic things you can do to increase your indoor air quality and have a healthier home environment.

Keep Your Home Clean

A vacuum with a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Arrestance) filter, good suction and rotating brushes is a great investment in the air quality of your home. Vacuuming once a week with a HEPA-certified vacuum can reduce the dust and allergens accumulating in your carpets and upholstered furniture.

There are some particles that sneak by your vacuum no matter how clean you keep your home. If you or someone in your home deals with allergies, a PureAir™ Air Purification System could be just what you need. This system is a whole-home solution that takes care of particles and odors, and eliminates chemical vapors – all things that can severely aggravate respiratory concerns.

Air Purifying Plants

Plants are a natural way to freshen your air and all plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. In addition, there are some plants that have been found to also neutralize harmful toxins such as: benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene.

If you’d like to add an air purifying plant to your home, you can find a list of those plants by checking out the NASA Clean Air Study. If you have pets, you’ll want to check and make sure any plants you’re introducing into your home are not harmful to them if they end up giving them a taste test.

Keep Your Home Ventilated

Modern homes are created to keep outdoor air out of your home in order to keep its energy efficiency. This decreased ventilation results in a build up of air pollutants inside. While it’s easy to simply crack a window, that may not fix it, which is why we have a few different ventilation solutions to help increase your indoor air quality and keep your home’s air clean and fresh.
