A "split" heating and air conditioning system consists of at least two pieces of equipment. Generally it includes the outside unit (condensor) and the inside unit (furnace, air handler, coil, etc). Normally, the ductwork that carries the air throughout the home is attached to the inside unit, therefore there is no need to run ductwork outside the exterior walls. Split systems can provide heat and cool, or cool only operations.
There are various models available using the following:
The efficiency of package units are rated using SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating--measures cooling efficiency), AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency--measures gas heating efficiency), and HSPF (Heating Season Performance Factor--measures heat pump efficiency).
