A package unit is a year round comfort system. All of the equipment is self-contained within one shell and it is installed outdoors, usually on a concrete or pre-fabricated slab, or on a rooftop. In the summer, a package unit provides the comfort of central air conditioning. During the cold season, the package unit provides heat using electricity or gas. Bascially, it is an air conditioner and heating unit in a single package. The conditioned air is brought into the home by ductwork.

There are various models available using the following:

• Electricity for resistance heating and electricity for cool (completely electric).
• Heat pump models using electricity for both heating and cooling (completely electric).
• Gas for heating and electricity for cooling.

The efficiency of package units are rated using SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating--measures cooling efficiency), AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency--measures gas heating efficiency), and HSPF (Heating Season Performance Factor--measures heat pump efficiency).
